Review: Saving Madeline by Rachel Ann Nunes

I'm home. And happy to be so. No place is quite as productive as my own couch, quite as comfortable as my own bed, and quite inviting as my own kitchen. Even if it's a little messy.

But I'm also battling a horrible depression because my husband is not here. I almost wish I hadn't gone to see him. My boys need their daddy. Just three more weeks. Sometimes I find myself lacking the energy or motivation to do anything. ANYTHING. It gets quite hard.

Enough about me!!! I finally get to blog about that great book I told you about last time, Saving Madeline. I will say this book is inspired by a true story, because it's fiction, but I know true events inspired Rachel Ann Nunes to write this book.

Set in present day, Saving Madeline follows Caitlin, a public defender (read: free lawyer) and Parker, a man who kidnapped his daughter from his ex-wife. Caitlin is a stout defender of justice and morality, and sometimes this is hard in her job, where she's paid to defend her client, good or bad. Parker looks like just another crook. On the outside, it appears a vindictive, jealous father took his daughter from her mother and is trying to destroy her reputation.

But Parker is different. His sincerity and concern for Madeline, as well as his kindness for Caitlin, tell a story about a man who will cross whatever line necessary to protect his child. How can Caitlin argue with that? She finds herself doing everything she can to prove Parker is in the right. But what she doesn't fully grasp is that they are in a race against time. Because if Parker is telling the truth, Madeline's life is in danger.

Nunes is a fantastic writer. This book held my attention from chapter one. It's a suspense novel, a thriller, and of course, no book would be complete without romance. This is the book that had me up until after 1 am, reading and waiting for the resolution. The book provides a lot of insight into the public judicial system as well as the child protection services--what they can and can't do. This is one book you want to read.

Want this book, but don't want to buy it? Everyone who comments on this post will be entered into a contest to win a copy of the book! So good luck!

Hang in there Tamara. I can't imagine how tough it must be.

I've never liked Rachel Ann Nunes' writing style much, but this book is getting great reviews all over the web. (I know I'm in the minority, she sells a lot of books.) I read in an interview that she put this book aside for a year and came back to it. She churns out books every 3-4 months so maybe this one is a step above her others simply because she spent more time on it. I may have to read it and see what I think.

Oh, sweety! That summer you saved my life and cam over and visited me everyday (where my husband was gone for only 2 1/2 months) was awful! I love ya and will keep you in my prayers!

Kate--I've never read anything else by Nunes, so I can't really compare her writing style. But I very much enjoyed this book. Like, 5 stars. I'm curious now about her other books. I'll have to read one and see how they compare.

Jannie--You always make me feel special.

I checked out her blog and am amazed at the busy life she leads. She is an inspiration.

I noticed that Saving Madeleine is published by Shadow Mountain, DB's imprint, and I suspect their editing dept is much more on top of things, because these are the books they put out for the national market.

Therefore, I suspect this one may be a cut above her others that had the DB imprint. Sometimes it is all about the editing.

I'm interested in the book, so one more to add to Goodreads. Thanks, Tamara!

I'm actually reading a Shadow Mountain book right now, Recovering Charles. I'm not head over heels with it, but there are some good aspects. I'll have to write more about it soon. Did any of your read the Fablehaven books Shadow Mountain published? I wasn't in love with the first one but a few of my friends say the second and third are better than the first and that they even love them.

I know that Fablehaven is a best seller out there among the LDS and non LDS markets. I like what DB is doing with Shadow Mountain. They had so many problems with the editing of their fiction offerings, most were too painful for me to read due to poor editing. But that was before Shadow Mountain. I think it's a great addition to the LDS publishing world.

Covers are better, too, for this imprint. Look at Rachel's cover, it's awesome. I would want to read it just for the cover.

I *loved* Fablehaven. Loved it. Like I haven't loved a series since Harry Potter (it wasn't that good, but it was good). Mark wasn't that impressed with the first one, but he plowed ahead b/c I told him the second was even better. We finished the 3rd one a year before the 4th came out and we were dying!!! The fourth wasn't quite as good, but still good.

I love the Fablehaven series. I think the 4th book is the best yet.
