If you've shopped around, you've probably noticed my rates are a lot lower than many editors out there. Let me assure you, it's not because I don't know what I'm doing or don't have a valuable service. It's because I'm also an author, and the thought of spending $2500 to get one book edited makes me cringe.
I don't want to gouge you and I want to make your book better. I do want to provide a little bit of extra money for my family, but I hope I can do so at a decent price for you and provide a service for our writing community.
Content Editing (ideal for first-time authors):
This is the most invasive type of editing. Content editing looks at the document as a whole and focuses on problems of structure, coherence, and organization. Material may need to be added, removed, or reorganized. Is your writing clear? Does it make sense? Is your word choice appropriate? Are there any redundancies or inconsistencies in the plot or narration? Are your characters or situations believable? During the editing process, I will leave you comments and questions in the margin of the document that address these issues. This includes two rounds of editing. After you've made your changes, we'll go through it again, this time doing a complete copy/line edit. $0.01 per word
Copyediting requires acute line-by-line editing, thus it is also known as Line Editing. I will check for spelling mistakes, typos, punctuation problems, capitalization errors, and awkward grammar. Copyediting focuses on the content, clarity, and consistency of the piece. While I include a minimal amount of content editing, usually the extent of a copy edit is improving sentence structure. This includes two rounds of editing. After you've made your changes, we'll go through it again, doing another copy/line edit on your changes. $0.008 per word
Final read-through (proofreading):
Your book is done and you are ready for it to be seen! This is the final check before you self-publish or send it to a publisher/agent. I'll proofread your book for final typos and make sure the t's are crossed and i's dotted. $0.0052 per word
(note: this job includes only one round of edits)
Want it all?
If you want someone who will work with you from your first draft to your finished product, you need a writing coach. In that role, I will become your editor as if I had been assigned to you via a publishing company. I will work through each revision with you, doing as many content edits and copy edits as necessary until the book is done, for one flat fee. Payments can be broken up. $0.01 per word (averaging the word count of the first round and the word count of the last round)
Each job includes two rounds of edits
10% off for repeat clients.
Discounts can be combined!
Not sure you'll like my style? I'll do several sample pages FOR FREE, with no commitment to use me for the rest of your book. Email me for a free quote on what you'd like done!
Most manuscript editing projects take 2-4 weeks for the first round of edits. A lot of this depends on availability, manuscript length, and how in-depth the edit. If you are in a hurry, I can do a rush-job for 25% more of the regular cost. Books 80K or less will have a 1-week turn around, and books 80-150K will have a 2-week turn around. Contact me to discuss longer projects.
Methods of payment
Required payment of 50% upfront and 50% upon return. Payment must be made before project begins. Your time slot is not secure until you pay 50% down. Required 100% payment upfront for projects under $50.
