Overusing Sara

Some names get used way too often.

The other day I was reading a book that involved a baby princess who would fulfill a prophecy. The characters reached a point where it was necessary to name the baby. And they named her...Sara.

What? Not again! This is on a made-up world in a made-up kingdom. And they also use the most common name in history?

Then I was reading a book set in the 1800s. The main character was, of course, named Sara. Granted, this is more understandable because in that day and time, 50% of girls were named Sara. But still...this is fiction. You can do what you want.

Or this sci-fi book I picked up with a tall, blue-skinned alien named...Sara.

Sarah, Plain and Tall.

Whether with an h or not, Sara has got to be the most overused name out there. And I'm sitting here rolling my eyes and thinking, "Why on earth would anyone name a main character Sara?"

And then it dawns on me. Hits me right out of the blue and I have to laugh.

One of the main characters in Perilous is named Sara.

So. :::shrug::: Maybe names are popular and used a lot for a reason.

I never thought of that. My new story has a man character named Sera... Well, it's actually Seraphine, but she just goes by Sera. I never even thought of it being overused.

Ouch, hehe. Naming characters can be such a tricky thing. I know I have to go and re-name several characters in my book before it comes out. I use an awful lot of placeholder names, but I don't think I've ever used Sara.

LOL, I notice that too. Bugs me a lil. I actually really like Cheree's idea for Seraphine, I think that is lovely... too bad her nickname just naturally ends up being Sera. (It wouldn't be as natural for her to go by "Phine" :O)
I am just determined that I will never name a child of my own Sara.

I didn't know that Sara was an overused name. One of my characters was named Sara after being Maria for awhile because I thought Maria was too common.

*shrugs* :D

That is hilarious! I did have a Sarah in my first book, but none since. :)

I agree but I have a sister named Sarah so I don't think I'll ever use it unless I'm really careful who I choose for it :) I do love the place holder names I have several going but I can't wait for the real thing to come in and tell me who they are!

I have a problem with getting name-stuck. I'll find I've even named several characters with the same name in the same book. So I'll watch out for Sara in the future!

How's about Cera? or Serra? or Sera? If you spell it differently, does it make a difference?

i don't know,Brent. That's up for debate. Looks like there are some popular other spellings hitting the book airs...

I've never had the urge to name a character Sara. I had a friend name Sara when I was a kid. She wasn't a very good friend. Maybe I'm bias. :)

LOL, Kari!

I think I'll start keeping track. Saras encountered over the weekend: one in a movie(love interest). one in a book (love interest's ex).
